Microsoft launches the 2009 edition

Microsoft Thursday gave the official start of the Imagine Cup 2009, the seventh edition of this competition open to students versed in computer sciences, design, web design or artificial intelligence. Unlike previous years, the publisher has now chosen not to apply themselves to a particular theme (environment in 2008), and offers a line of conduct based on the "Objectives of the Millennium Development Goals" set by the United Nations , Which will remain in force for 2010 and 2011 editions.

The contest is open to college and university students, the Imagine Cup revolves around nine disciplines. In that interest, participants will have several months to try to establish a concrete project, capable of responding to one of the issues developed by the United Nations: fair trade, biodiversity, reduction of the greenhouse effect, access to education or equal opportunities between men and women.

Alongside spearheads techniques such as software design, development board or category systems and networks, Imagine Cup races offers photography, short film, video game development, design (man-machine interfaces) and two launches for 2009 new disciplines: virtual robots, to develop the most effective strategy to enable a robot to perform a number of missions through artificial intelligence, and mashup and Web, or how to combine sites and online services to meet multiple needs.

Microsoft plans to rename Live Search

The research on the Internet remains a major challenge for Microsoft and yet, the Redmond company does not appear to have found its way. Given that Google has more than 80% of the market and Yahoo! that flirts with the 11%, Microsoft had tried several strategies but none of them has proved fruitful. So why not again?

The current Live Search engine, launched in May 2006 to replace MSN Search, does not seem convinced. Moreover, the requests through the MSN portal are more important than Live Search. To revitalize its strategy, Microsoft has tried alternatives such as paying people to make complaints with Live Search Cashback. Then the Microsoft case-Yahoo! took a new turn and Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, appeared more interested in a partnership in research on the Internet rather than by an aggregate redemption of the portal.

4GB DDR3 modules soon?

Section Korean electronics giant Samsung has announced having received certification of Intel chips for its 2 Gb (or 256 MB), presented in early October on Core configurations i7

Little reminder, these chips, engraved in 50 nm will get 4 GB modules (16 chips using 256 MB). Intel has also endorsed such a module Samsung DDR3-1066 MHz transition. Not wrath of war Overclockers then, but otherwise fill the 6 slots proposed by some X58 motherboards and get 24 GB of RAM in passing.

The DDR3 chips can reach a density of 8 Gb from Samsung, there is still margin! According to a market survey, the Korean founder expects that DDR3 steals 29% of it in 2009, and 72% in 2011. Regarding chips 2 Gb, they see their sales increase by 3% in 2009 to 33% in 2011.

Visa survey reveals 80 percent of Asia Pacific

The internet is proving as appealing a shopping destination as the likes of shopping centres in Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong or Orchard Road in Singapore. According to a Visa e-Commerce Tracking Survey, nearly 80 percent of internet users surveyed in Asia Pacific say they made an online transaction and spent an average of over US$3,000 each in the past 12 months[1].

The top three draws for shopping online were being able to shop at any time (88 percent), at the best prices (83 percent), and being able to shop easily (82 percent). According to the respondents, their most commonly made online purchases were digital entertainment (59 percent), travel (51 percent) and fashion (49 percent).

Among the wide range of products and services available on the internet, Asia Pacific online shoppers surveyed reported that they spent the most on travel services with an average spending of US$812 in the last 12 months. Travel items included airline and rail tickets, hotel accommodation and travel packages.

Mohamad Hafidz, regional head, e-Commerce, Asia Pacific, Visa, said: “Nearly a quarter of the world's population – roughly 1.4 billion people – used the internet on a regular basis in 2008 [2] and in Asia Pacific, on average, a person spent about 20.2 hours a month online[3]. Our own survey has revealed online consumers in Asia Pacific recognize the convenience of online shopping as reflected in the high percentage of internet users who buy a wide range of products, from that for everyday use to the occasional high-value item online.”

Microsoft and Nvidia together for the anti iPhone

"A possible agreement between Microsoft and Nvidia could give life to the first SmartPhone developed by the colossus of Redmond"

What iPhone has been successful is a fact. In the wake of crisis, have moved many producers, one in all, Samsung with its Omnia, reaching goals are far from the record made by Apple. Now, according to some rumors, we also try Microsoft. According to Daily reports, the giant leader in the development of operating systems would be increasingly interested in entering this particular segment, which already plays a leading role to view the location of Windows Mobile.

To be able to move successfully with the Redmond company has signed an agreement with Nvidia, known producer of video cards, in order to exploit the platform Tegra. This type of platform, a SoC (system on a chip) is a chip able to retain, within it, the main functions of a normal system, presenting both a CPU is a GPU.According to rumors first reported by the complete system should be presented during the 3GSM scheduled for February 2009.

Google Layoffs 10,000 Jobs Being Cut

In announcing its results for the third quarter of 2008, Google said, without specifying balance its operating costs. According to sources the magazine WebGuild California, pretty well under this formula is in fact hiding up to 10 000 layoffs. Seemingly unshakeable, the Internet giant is starting to show some signs of weakness, like its competitor Yahoo, difficulties in the past few months.

Google officially employs just over 20 000 employees, which have in fact added 10 000 temporary employees (interim equivalents and short-term contracts) which, being renewed or by changing position regularly, are not included in the Official breakdown. The company was able to remain discreet about the layoffs as it must communicate as those of its permanent staff. It has already been quietly dismissed several hundred temporary employees, according to sources WebGuild.

Facing the context of economic crisis that affects particularly advertising, its main source of income, the leader of the research have decided to reduce the number of employees. When contacted by the American press, the spokesperson Jane Penner refused to indicate in detail how many positions would be affected, admitting however that it was "planned for some time to significantly reduce that number. CyberVia sign the first high-definition media server

The CyberVia designed by the company of the same name, is the first server for home digital HD television. Under his look of banal TV decoder is hiding an all-in-one quite original. Its implementation within your network is fairly close to that of a network storage server (NAS). The product has a Gigabit Ethernet port to connect to a router or the box provided by your ISP. Bigger files, CyberVia embeds a hard drive 1000 Go, where you store all your music, photos and videos. Therefore, it would be easy to access and read these files live (streaming) from each of the computers on the network.

No fear for any compatible files, the computer will decode it on the fly during playback. However, if it comes to play HD, the manufacturer says it is essential to have a machine powerful enough. For your music, photos or Divx, notebooks and aging Netbook should access these files without problem. Another constraint, if you use a machine connected to Wi-Fi, streaming playback could be a problem, or even be impossible if it comes to HD files.

To do so, it incorporates a double tuner TNT HD compatible with both the free channels of TNT that pay packages (Eurosport, Canal +, etc.).. Of course, to access pay channels, it will drag your smart card into the reader, available at the front. Connected to the CyberVia knows disseminate the files it contains, as well as TNT, on the Internet.
Again, it is necessary to configure the router to activate this feature. For users who would be uncomfortable with the various functions of a router (opening and forwarding ports), the manufacturer supplies software that will. We look at its programs, you listen to his music, you download your photos remotely on a simple Internet interface.

MacBook and MacBook Pro: problems with video subsystem

"People found two problems with recent graphics systems MacBook and MacBook Pro, one of the two solved via software"

You still have problems the youth of the new MacBook and MacBook Pro, this time charged to the video subsystem. As we learn by reading the support forum official Mela and also shows how the web site Appleinsider, the problems would be two distinct and at least there should be an opportunity for resolution through a simple software upgrade.

The most serious problem currently occurs only on the MacBook Pro at sessions of play: it is found a block of the system, with black screen, loss of control and audio loop that enters a few minutes after the launch of a game face intensively use of the graphics card. As we learn the problem was found with several recent title or not, such as Call of Duty 4, World of Warcraft, Ages of Empire III, Command and Conquer, Oblivion and Company of Heroes.

Since the problem was found both Mac OS X, both Boot Camp and Windows, it is quite likely that the case is to be attributed to reasons relating to hardware, perhaps to a less than optimal cooling of the GPU. Apple is already aware of the problem and some users have reported the disappearance of the problem with the replacement of the logic board once led the notebook in assistance. Even copies of lots of recent production would not be affected.

AMD price drop in early December?

AMD is expected to lower its prices by 10 to 20% in early December. The smelter has provided information to retailers through a newsletter. While the Core i7 comes at the top of the range, AMD hopes some chip market share to Intel in the mid-range segment. This will also allow AMD to sell some processors in addition to Christmas pending the arrival of its Phenom II early January. As a reminder, the new CPU's manufacturer should be announced at the opening of CES, January 8, probably during the keynote of its President and CEO Dirk Meyer.

HEXUS attended public prices approximate (it is not tariffs by 1000) before and after the fall.

Nokia Home Control Center:

Home automation is still an issue, which over the years has presented several interesting projects and innovations, but that is not yet able to make the big leap and really get into all the houses. Perhaps what was missing to the full development the home is the thrust of a major label, which can generate confidence and familiarity in users, prompting them to take home for their innovative solutions.

The tide may change with the entry of Nokia in the field. Nokia has announced it is developing the platform Nokia Home Control Center, which aims to integrate security solutions for home automation and management into a single control center, accessible locally or remotely by PC and Smartphone. This is a platform Linux-based, as reported in the presentation of the project site within the Nokia Smart Home Solutions.

VIA Nano Dual Core NETBOOK due in 2010

Promising on paper, the processor low VIA Nano is not really commercially available that things happen already around his successor, VIA Nano Dual Core.

In any case that reveals a roadmap unveiled at a trade fair in Japan, which indicates that the first test copies should be available in December 2009 and that the processor should enter into mass production in June 2010. The challenger VIA reproduces the route taken by Intel with its direct competitor the Atom, which was first available in single-heart before being recently declined by double-hearts.

VIA promises anyway that Nano Dual Core will further improve performance and adopt a new manufacturing process not specified. It should therefore unlikely to be a burning 65-nm technology used for the first generation Nano . It remains to be seen whether, despite the delay he can nibble market share in the Atom which is already well established.

PS2/PSP Sales "Healthy." PS3 Sales

he Regal Gamer talks about something rarely seen on other gaming sites -- PlayStation India. It may not be a major player in the gaming scene, but Sony's throwing some serious support to the country. India is home to the PS2, PSP and PS3 -- but how has PlayStation been doing there?

According to Atindriya Bose, country manager of PlayStation India, "PS2 and PSP sales are healthy." However, "the PS3 still has to pick up." The high price of PS3 makes it rather lucrative for buyers to look towards the gray market. The PlayStation Network is also unavailable in India, due to the lack of "required infrastructure." "Many people in India don't have high speed internet connections so if they are trying to download a game over the PSN store they'll have to wait for days together. So, we are still waiting for better infrastructure."

With India becoming an increasing force in the global market, it's understandable Sony wants to get their foot in early. It'll be interesting to see how Sony takes on the unique aspects of the Indian market, and if they're able to translate that into success.

India's Top ITeS and BPO Companies 2008

Dun & Bradstreet, the world’s leading provider of global business information, knowledge and insight, released the fourth edition of its publication, India’s Top ITeS and BPO Companies 2008. The study highlights the key achievements of the sector and its major growth drivers. It also covers the dynamics of the ITeS and BPO industry in India and its future direction.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Manoj Vaish, President & CEO – India, Dun & Bradstreet said, “While the ITeS-BPO industry is bound to be impacted by the financial crisis, firms have taken measures to mitigate some of that risk. The industry has started providing services to a wider set of verticals, thus reducing their exposure to any one vertical. For instance, the BFSI sector’s share of the overall pie of services offered by the surveyed ITeS-BPO companies dropped to 28% in FY08 from 31% in FY07. This trend is set to continue.”

“We see a similar trend for conventional BPO services as well. While conventional BPO services continue to form a majority of the total services offered by the surveyed companies, this year’s study has seen conventional BPO services drop by almost 10 per cent from last year. On the other hand, service lines such as KPO, LPO, EPO and eLearning have increased its share considerably. Margins are substantially higher in these services and with companies keen to diversify, revenues from these services are bound to increase,” he added.

Intel is preparing its response GHz AMD

Intel processor s'overclocke less qu'AMD (see this news), it was not long ago. Despite the fact that this "record" has been achieved in conditions not very fair or less realistic (some protections were disabled, and of course a selection of the best processors have been conducted) at Intel, it is when not even really happy.

And what do we do when we are not happy at Intel, one response. The manufacturer will probably hold its own demonstration of overclocking. The victim is obviously a Core i7, and the cast will already be launched to find the pearl that would achieve ...7 GHz! Some speak of a sort more than 100 000 processors ... If it Macci at AMD who had been chosen, Intel would call for another great name, FUGGER to XtremeSystems. The demonstration would take place at CES, instead of launching the Phenom II ...As early Gueguerre which did not place among fans!

Quest Software Releases New Predictive

Quest Software, yesterday announced the addition of predictive diagnostics to its Spotlight on Oracle® product, which thousands of customers use to find and fix database performance bottlenecks in real time. The new predictive capabilities extend Spotlight’s value and allow users to predict the future performance of SQL statements.

Spotlight on Oracle analyzes SQL performance to determine which statements will have the most performance degradation given trends in execution rates and overall database load. Spotlight reports the anticipated growth in resource consumption and the percentage of the total load a particular statement will consume. By finding problematic SQL statements before performance is impacted, corrective actions can be taken without disrupting end users and organizations can more effectively meet end user Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

“In virtually every organization, the database is core to critical applications, processes and user activities. Therefore, IT must be as proactive as possible when it comes to database performance management,” said Guy Harrison, Oracle expert, Quest Software. “The traditional approach of fixing problems as they occur fails to adequately ensure business service levels.”

ATI and scalability with quad core CPU

"The small scale of frames with quad core CPU and ATI video cards will be resolved in early 2009 with new driver Catalyst"

In recent days we have noted, with this news, as the debut of ATI Catalyst 8.12 drivers will be provided with cards of the series Radeon HD 4000, full support for ATI Stream, which you can use these cards for video processing of GPU Computing.

A first concrete step will be available, free of charge, software ATI Aviv Converter, with which you can perform transcoding of video streams in different formats relief processor system from this type of processing.

One element in which ATI has yet to implement various optimizations driver architecture to support quad core processor in the games, unlike NVIDIA switching from a dual core processor to a quad core, using the API DirectX 10, does not allow to achieve performance gains. The DirectX 10 API allow it to handle multithreading mode all operations related to the transfer of data between the CPU and driver Direct 3D, so that this happens is obviously a need for optimization side driver.

The presence of a quad core processor is not responsible course of a performance increase in every type of use. We are obviously talking about the conditions in which the frames per second generated by a video are limited by processor power processor, not the video card. Some titles have been optimized by manufacturers to exploit the presence of more than 2 core processor, but i

quarter. The net loss for the phone maker in the quarter, which ended
December 31, was $3.6 billion, or $1.57 per share, compared with
positive earnings of $100 million (4 cents per share) for the same
period a year earlier.

All but one penny of the per-share loss stemmed from net charges
related to the impairment of goodwill and an increase in deferred tax
asset valuation reserves. The loss had been widely expected after
Motorola in January announced plans for layoffs and said revenue would
come in below analysts' expectations, on weaker-than-expected handset
sales.

Revenue for the fourth quarter was $7.1 billion, down 26 percent from
$9.6 billion year over year. Motorola stressed Tuesday that it is
doing everything it can to keep costs under control amid a faltering
economy. Co-CEOs Greg Brown and Sanjay Jha said in a statement:

In light of the economic climate and challenges we face, we have
implemented aggressive measures to reduce costs and improve financial
flexibility, particularly in Mobile Devices. The cost-reduction
actions underway are expected to generate aggregate savings of
approximately $1.5 billion in 2009.

Nokia features "Zook" mobile search

Zook is a new idea in mobile search that combines the results of
broader web page search with social-networking functions and the
knowledge of the location of your S60 device to provide you with
optimised search and interaction. It offers search on demand as well
as search powered alerts, where based on your search, you can also
choose to receive automatic alerts pushed to your phone.

Since it is location-aware, you can not only search for a given movie,
but also know the closest movie theater that is playing that movie. If
your phone has a built-in GPS, then Zook can use the precise location
specified by your GPS hardware; and if you do not have GPS, Zook uses
your cell ID to derive an approximation of your location for searching
purposes. You can of course, do location-independent searching, such
as searching for music, videos, and other content.

Sony and Sharp delay joint venture plans

The global financial crisis begins to take its toll: Sony Corp. and
Sharp Corp. said that they postpone formal establishment of the joint
venture that will operate 10th generation LCD fab.

Faced with changes in the world economy, Sharp and Sony amended and
extended the non-binding memorandum of understanding to confirm their
mutual intent to postpone the targeted establishment of a joint
venture until March 2010, approximately one year later than originally
scheduled. Sharp and Sony will, through continued discussions of how
the two companies can best deploy their resources and expertise,
continue to negotiate in good faith and have set June 30, 2009 as the
target date by which to enter into a definitive agreement to establish
a joint venture that will be mutually beneficial for both companies.

Despite the postponement of the joint venture, Sharp plans to start
operating its new LCD panel factory in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture
(currently under construction) by March 2010 as originally scheduled.

10th generation LCD factories will process substrates that have sides
of 3 meters or longer, whereas currently utilized 8th generation
factories process LCD substrates that have sides of 2.2 – 2.5 meters.

Background processing coming with iPhone 3.0?

Apple might be planning to allow background processing in a future
iPhone, perhaps having decided that its planned push-notification
system for the iPhone was not the best solution.

MacRumors has a report out today saying they've "heard" that Apple is
thinking about dropping its objection to having iPhone applications
run in the background at some point in the future. If you'll recall,
Apple announced last June that iPhone users wouldn't be able to run
more than one application at the same time in order to preserve
battery life and performance, which surprised developers used to
creating smartphone applications for other platforms with that
capability intact.

At present, the iPhone must automatically close most apps and only
allows certain of Apple's own services to run in the background, such
as e-mail checks and music playback. The interface is often cited as
the primary reason for the limit, as it doesn't include buttons or
shortcuts to switch apps without closing. When justifying the its
since-stalled background push notification efforts, Apple didn't
overly reject the notion of running background apps but criticized
operating systems like Windows Mobile for poor management that
necessitated a dedicated task manager to close programs.

MSI unveils 9cm fan on R4870-MD1G

MSI International, has unveiled the R4870-MD1G and R4870-MD512
graphics cards. MSI designed these two cards to be perfect for gamers
demanding performance, quality, and low-temperature operation by
equipping them with an extra large fan, an extra cool cooling system,
and extra long lifespan components. The entire card features best
class solid capacitors and SSC (solid-state chokes) built-in to the
design that helps to smoothly handle high-power levels and punch-out
amazing performance. The solid design also helps to extend the cards
total lifespan. Featuring all three - HDMI, DVI and D-Sub (VGA) -
major display output, these two cards are sure to please those looking
for big-screen LCD monitor or LCD TV display.

Extra large 9cm fan

The R4870-MD1G and R4870-MD512 both equip a surprisingly large 9cm fan
which provides high heat dissipation with low noise. The majority of
graphics cards use an 8cm fan, which, when running at around 3500~3800
rpm, can create 35 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air flow along with
a rather loud noise. However, the R4870-MD1G and R4870-MD512's 9cm
large fan runs about 1000 rpm less (~2800 rpm) and produces a whopping
56 CFM air flow. This difference is a 60% increase in efficiency,
while, at the same time, creating a quieter environment because of the
slower speed. The two cards also equip a copper base, big heatsink
area and dual heatpipes design. Coupled with the enlarged fan,
compared to reference design, this total cooling solution can lower
the ATI 4870 card's average temperature down by 20°C! Who said the ATI
Radeon HD 4870 is a heat monster? MSI is able to offer a cool and
quiet model to this famous card using its unique c

Panasonic warns of loss, 15,000 layoffs

Japan's Panasonic, the world's No.1 plasma TV maker, warned Wednesday
it will post an annual loss of $4.3 billion and said it will cut
15,000 jobs as it grapples with a stronger yen and slowing demand.

The maker of Viera flat TVs and Lumix digital cameras joins a growing
list of electronics makers stepping up restructuring in the face of a
global slump that is shaping up to be nastier than the last major
downturn in 2001 after the IT bubble.

"Sales fell in all our business segments in the third quarter. We
expect sharper sales declines in this quarter, and profits are likely
to shrink in every segment," Panasonic director Makoto Uenoyama told a
news conference.

Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi are all facing multi billion dollar losses,
crippled by the double whammy of falling sales and a strong Japanese
currency that eats into overseas profits when repatriated.

The yen's surge to a 13-year high against the dollar has also made
Japanese electronics less competitive than goods from South Korean
rivals such as Samsung Electronics, which are benefiting from a softer
won.

Panasonic said it will close 27 manufacturing sites in the current
fiscal year that ends in March and will carry out another round of
plant closures of a similar scale in the next business year.

It also plans to cut around 15,000 jobs, including both full-time
regular employees and contract workers. Half the cuts will be in Japan
and half overseas. It has a global workforce of about 300,000 regular
workers.

On top of dwindling sales of consumer gadgets, Panasonic's factory
automation equipment operations have come under pressure as companies
worldwide cut production and spending on manufacturing tools.

The company also said it will delay the start-up of its new LCD panel
plant in western Japan by six months, to July 2010.

An IBM supercomputer up to 20 PetaFLOPs

"It comes into production in its final form only in 2012 the new IBM
supercomputer built using technology Blue Genie"

The availability of processing power increasingly large open space to
use increasingly demanding of their PCs in both home and office, at
costs that prove to be if not in constant decline as a constant. Just
think of the ability to run video editing complex flows on
high-definition video to determine a home for passionate users, able
to exploit fully in all the processing power of your system.

The increase in processing power of PCs can be exploited best when the
problems to be solved in terms of calculations, involving the
simultaneous use of thousands of processors. We speak of the
Supercomputer, a term adopted to describe the cluster of PCs connected
to each other and specifically dedicated to parallel computations, and
particularly heavy at the same time, important.

MSI introduces 'affordable' Core i7 X58

MSI launches a new and relatively affordable motherboard, based on
Intel's X58 chipset. This makes the MSI X58 Pro compatible with
Intel's recently introduced Core i7 processors. The board features an
ICH10R chip, supports QPI (Quick Path Interconnect) and has six
triple-channel DDR3 memory slots. Like the two AM3 motherboards that
MSI introduced last week, this board also has the second generation of
DrMOS chips and APS technology. With almost every X58 motherboard on
the market classed as "enthusiast" and therefore rather expensive, MSI
is looking to buck the trend by announcing its most affordable X58
motherboard, the X58 Pro.

The X58 Pro, just like other MSI high-end motherboard product, comes
with an onboard eSATA 3Gb/s interface to adopts the concept of plug &
play storage. It allows users to connect a backup HDD in such an easy
way requiring no complex setting and skill from users, leading to not
only less accessing time and CPU resource requirements, but also
better data transaction signal quality against hard disk failure.

Unlike the other eSATA bracket solution, X58 Pro is designed with
onboard eSATA on rear I/O to give the direct link to extra storage
chip and Intel chipset, provide the best compatibility with external
storage device and stable quality when time goes by.

NEC Electronics Sharpens Image Quality

NEC Electronics today introduced a new application-specific standard
product (ASSP) to address the dramatic divergence between yesterday's
image resolution and the high resolution of today's audio-visual (AV)
display systems. Based on the company's unique single-frame
super-resolution technology, the small, low-power ASSP (part number
uPD9245GJ) reduces the blurring that occurs when low-resolution images
are expanded and displayed in high-resolution. The ASSP sharpens
out-of-focus images, smoothes rough edges and refines contours by
analyzing and processing information contained in one frame of data in
real time. Using standard video interfaces for data input and output,
designers can easily integrate the ASSP into a wide variety of
consumer, industrial, medical and automotive devices that handle
images and video.

The technology is also available as an intellectual property (IP) core
that can be embedded into ASICs or other ASSP products, such as NEC
Electronics' Enhanced Multimedia Architecture (EMMAâ) ASSP for digital
AV devices. NEC Electronics plans to continue developing
next-generation super-resolution ASSPs with increased operating
frequency and expanded video output size, and by 2010, the company
expects to receive orders totaling more than US$110 million for
super-resolution products.

Significant loss for THQ: 600 layoffs

As a whole, the video game industry has grown between 2007 and 2008,
but this success does not seem to affect everyone the same way. Thus,
while Nintendo has drawn significant benefits, other companies are in
a less favorable position.

This is particularly true of THQ, which has just announce a loss of
191.8 million (148.2 million euros) for the last quarter of its fiscal
year. A result obviously less exciting than the earnings over the same
period last year ($ 15.5 million or 11.9 million).

These figures are obviously not without consequences and THQ has
already announced the elimination of 600 positions, or 24% of its
total workforce. This restructuring has not been discussed in detail
and we do not know what areas of activity will be affected, but it is
certainly not good news.

The study, "Why mobile advertising matters", undertaken in partnership
with TNS India that was unveiled at an exclusive event in Mumbai,
showed increasing patterns of mobile Internet use, and positive
signals for brands looking to benefit from the fast growing medium.

Nokia India, said: "People now have a social and emotional need to
stay connected 24x7 with friends, information and entertainment and
it's big news for brands that mobile web users now access the internet
through their device almost as frequently as they do through their
PC."

Findings from the research:
Mobile web users are using their mobile to access the Internet almost
as much as the traditional web (2.4 days per week versus 2.7 days)
More users are finding out about new product information via the
mobile web (28 percent) than the traditional web (26 percent)

Lenovo CEO steps down

Lenovo President and CEO William Amelio resigned Thursday after the
Chinese PC maker reported a nearly $97 million loss for its fiscal
third quarter.

Yang Yuanqing has relinquished his role as chairman to replace Amelio
as CEO, effective Thursday, the company said in a statement filed with
Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing. Yang will remain as an executive
director and had served as the company's CEO until April 2005 when he
was appointed board chairman.

The announcement comes at the end of Amelio's three-year contract with
the company, Lenovo said, adding that Amelio will serve as a special
adviser until September 30.

In a separate filing with the Hong Kong exchange, Lenovo reported
losses of $96.7 million in its fiscal third quarter that ended
December 31. That compares with $172.6 million profit in the same
quarter a year earlier.

The PC maker said a market shift toward entry-level PCs, aggressive
pricing, and currency fluctuations had affected Lenovo's gross margin,
which dipped to 9.8 percent year over year. Its gross profit fell 48
percent to $354 million.

Coupled with a decline in sales, the pressure on margins resulted in
the quarter's loss, the company said.

Nvidia-based Microsoft smartphone coming?

Rumors that Microsoft will launch its own smartphones have gained
steam again, with one analyst predicting that the device may be
introduced at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in two weeks.

The Microsoft-branded phone may include Nvidia's Tegra processor and a
telecommunications baseband chip from Qualcomm, wrote Doug Freedman of
Broadpoint AmTech in a report Thursday.

Microsoft already sells the Zune portable media player, among other
devices, so it isn't a stranger to the hardware business. And it has
its Windows Mobile OS, which it licenses to other phone makers. But it
doesn't yet have a smartphone of its own.

Rumors surfaced last year that Microsoft would launch a smartphone at
the Consumer Electronics Show in January, but none materialized.
Freedman now believes it will happen at MWC, which takes place Feb.
16-19 in Barcelona.Freedman goes on to say that the company is looking
to support more than just the Windows operating systems and is also
looking to support either RIM (RIMM) or Apple (AAPL).

Should we have to pick between the two we would favor AAPL support as
a building block of Tegra is from PortalPlayer, a past supplier to
AAPL iPod products.

and interactive "social entertainment" experience and represents an
important new monetization opportunity utilizing hi5 Coins, hi5's
virtual currency, which launched in December. Users will eventually be
able to utilize hi5 Coins for direct transactions, such as premium
content, advanced gaming features, and status upgrades. hi5 will also
be offering new and immersive advertising options on hi5 Games, which
allow brands to better engage their target audience.

Windows Mobile 7.0 will Come in April 2010

Giant will release the upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 to manufacturers in
April 2009, while the first handsets to sport the platform are
expected to reach the market in September this year. Also, the
operating system is set to be
showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this month.

While WM 6.5 will probably not bring many changes when compared to the
6.1 version, WM 7 is expected to be Microsoft's truly innovative OS.

As for Windows Mobile 7, the news stated that it should reach testers
in November this year, while the first devices to sport the OS should
be unveiled in April 2010. The software company has kept quiet in
regard to the features included in both Windows Mobile 6.5 and WinMo
7. Some rumors pointed towards gesture recognition and multi-touch
capabilities coming along with the future operating systems, yet
nothing else surfaced.

This might come from the fact that the company announced not long ago
that there would be fewer handsets running WinMo released to the
market, which means that the work relationship between Microsoft and
manufacturers has been tightened up a little.

SP2 for Vista, Windows Server 2008

The first release candidates (without numerals) for Service Pack 2 for
both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 will be released to the
general public for testing next week. This after private testers with
the MSDN and TechNet services receive their copies first.

For the first time, the SP2 standalone package will be delivered to
users not according to operating system build, but to byte length. So
the 32-bit standalone service pack (302 MB with the basic five
languages, 390 MB for multi-language) will update both 32-bit Vista
and 32-bit Windows Server 2008. Then there will be two 64-bit
standalones, including one which covers x64 architectures (508 MB /
622 MB) and one for Itanium 64-bit (384 MB / 396 MB). The RC will
represent a kind of dress rehearsal for this new method of
distribution.

While the big theme for Vista SP2 has been reliability improvements,
perhaps the most prominent new operating system feature undergoing its
final round of tests will be the ability to burn to Blu-ray media
using BD-R. This is being described as "the ability to record data to
Blu-ray Disc Media," which is not exactly the same as saying "burn
high-def videos." Currently, the Ultimate version of Vista SP1 enables
users to burn recorded videos from digital video sources to DVD.
Though it's technically feasible to burn high-def videos, when they're
burned to regular DVD, they won't be all that long.

Intel to Expand ULV Processor Lineup

Intel are planning a new pair of ultra-low voltage processors that
will be specially shaved down for ultraportable notebooks, according
to the latest leaked reports. The Core 2 Duo SU9600 and Core 2 Solo
SU3500 will have core speeds of 1.6GHz and 1.4GHz respectively.

By the end of March the chip maker will intro two new CPUs, namely the
SU9600 and the SU3500, with clock frequencies of 1.6GHz and 1.4GHz,
respectively. The higher-clocked SU9600 will be priced at US$289 in
1000-unit tray quantities, while the SU3500 will become available for
about US$262. The two new processors, which will join Intel's existing
lineup, will be paired with the GS45 IGP chipset.

The two components are also characterized as part of a new
reorganization of Intel's low-power line that will split it into three
distinct categories, with a single ultra low-voltage Celeron chip as
the budget model, Core 2 Solo processors at the mid-range, and Core 2
Duo as the high end. While reasons for this shift are unclear, the
company is heavily rumored as developing a new Consumer Ultra Low
Voltage processor designed for systems between $699 and $899 that
would trigger such a shift.

Intel's strategy in 2009

Yesterday, at a conference in San Francisco, Paul Otellini, CEO of
Intel, announced the company's strategy in the long term and the next
lines of investment.

Mr. Otellini, the processor market is being stabilized and the company
is now able to predict more accurately the amount of processors to be
produced. Earlier this month, the United States, the firm has invested
$ 7 billion to expand or upgrade production facilities dedicated to
the manufacture of chips engraved in 32 nanometers. Moreover, he
believes that "there are a lot of money about to be spent" and that
the security updates of major infrastructure will result in increased
sales of processors. Moreover, Mr. Otellini estimated that there are
350 million PCs aged four years and many of them will soon be updated
or replaced.

Intel intends to continue its integration efforts initiated within the
Core i7 processors who board memory controller directly.Thereafter,
the engineers intend to include a graphics controller. "Rather than
improve performance, we focus on integration," says the CEO, then
adds: "In 5 years the majority of Intel's products are systems on a
chip."

The company has surpassed AMD in its burning in 45-nanometer
processors and will pursue this with a voice recording in 32 nm as it
would, among other things, reduce manufacturing costs. A case of

Also, LG Electronics recently announced the production of smartphones

NTT DoCoMo Inc, Japan's biggest mobile phone operator, said on Friday
it has halted sales of Research In Motion's BlackBerry Bold because
the phone can overheat while the battery is being recharged.

users have complained the phone's keyboard area had heated up. The
company said it has received no reports of users getting burned or of
phones catching on fire.

devices sold in Japan since last week and sales of BlackBerry Bold
devices in other countries are unaffected by this matter," RIM said in
a statement.

RIM said it had ruled out a battery problem, but said the root cause
is still being investigated.

Gmail hit by a bug (update)

Ironically? While Google has recently launched a feature that allows
access to its Gmail Web mail offline, the service knows since this
morning, 11 hours, malfunction generally felt in the world, although
it would appear that the access in POP3 and IMAP are still valid for
some users. At the press, Google just for the moment to make an
apology addressed to users, and promises a prompt return online.

"We are aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a small proportion of
users", explained to 11:19 this morning an employee of Google on one
of the forums of the engine. At 12:13, a second message indicates that
the problem should be solved, but at 12.35 pm, Gmail is not accessible
in France for many users.

Related services such as Google Calendar, are still functional, but
the engine will display a warning message when logging in to Google
Apps, a suite of online services, indicating that users may experience
problems with their e-mail .

Gmail is certainly not the first to know webmail service interruption
of a few tens of minutes, but the service from Google is perhaps the
only cause malfunctions such an interest. In the afternoon, many
English media had already reported on the damage, including
generalists such as the BBC or the Guardian in Britain. The impact was
much less when in August 2008, Gmail was returned for almost an hour a
"502 error" for the Internet trying to connect to the service. Google
had cited a technical problem related to loading the contact manager.

Yahoo! Open to sale

Internet pioneer Yahoo! is open to selling its Web search business or
entering into a partnership with another company, but doing a deal
would be hard, a top executive said on Wednesday.

"We are not opposed to doing a deal that would maximize the value of
the business in one way or another, be it a partnership or be it a
long term sale," Yahoo! chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen said.

"We're very focused though on building our business and doing that in
a way which we can benefit all from the search side," he added during
a Goldman Sachs technology conference here.

Microsoft has expressed interest in Yahoo!'s search business and made
a bid for the Sunnyvale, California-based firm last year but Jorgensen
did not mention the US software giant as a potential partner.

"It's extremely difficult to draw a line down the middle of the
organisation and split it in two pieces," Jorgensen said. "It doesn't
say we couldn't do it, we certainly could, but we want to do it for
the right reasons and the right economics."

Yahoo! rejected a takeover bid by Microsoft last year but Microsoft
chief executive Steve Ballmer has said the software giant remains
interested in a search partnership with Yahoo!

Speculation of such a deal has been revived with the departure of
Yahoo! chief executive Jerry Yang, who opposed the Microsoft bid, and
his replacement by new CEO Carol Bartz.

Apple preparing Mac OS X for Open

Linux might not need to prepare for a battle because its just an
opinion of what Apple should do, not what they are doing.

If they do release it as open source, do you think it could compete
against Linux? Development is much faster with Linux than OS X would
be. Would OS X actually work as an open source project. Linux is
developed just as the kernel, and other components are developed
independently and packaged into distros. Would that mean that the OS X
kernel would be developed independently? Naa! Practically, Not! It
will take decades for OS X to do that...! Why not just use Linux, if
were going to do this they might as well.Options are always great!

Fourth beta before Firefox 3.1

If one recently could learn some information on the functionalities
which should be integrated into Firefox 3.2, the development team
intends to publish fourth beta for version 3.1.

Originally envisaged for the end 2008, Firefox 3.1 is seen again
delayed. Last Wednesday, Mike Shaver, director of the ecosystem of
development at Mozilla explained: "we will finalize beta 3 in the
current of the next week (...) a quatrème beta should be installation
6 weeks later in order to allow fuller tests for Tracemonkey, it video
and other very awaited improvements that we collected through the
returns of beta 3".

"A fourth beta will follow approximately six weeks after, as a vehicle
for more testing of [the] TraceMonkey [JavaScript engine], video,
Places and other eagerly-awaited improvements, as well as feedback
from Beta 3," Shaver said in a message on a company forum .

Shaver's decision to push out Beta 3, come hell or high water,
followed comments by a few Mozilla developers who wondered whether
it's smart to hold up Firefox for TraceMonkey fixes. One company
programmer speculated that minus the new JavaScript engine, Mozilla
could have wrapped up Firefox 3.1 by this point. "Without TraceMonkey,
we probably could have shipped 3.1 final by now, or, if not now,
within the next month," said Firefox developer David Baron last week .
