Re: IExplore.exe running in background
"iexplore.exe" is the Internet Browser from Mircosoft. It is a part of the Windows Operating system. Check the security settings for this program to minimize the risk when you are surfing.Any malware can be named anything - so you should check where the files of the running processes are located on your disk. If a "non-Microsoft" .exe file is located in the C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 folder, then there is a high risk for a virus, spyware, trojan or worm infection!

Re: IExplore.exe running in background
There are worms like W32/Lovgate-AD that will cause the same problem you are experiencing. In addition to other files it drops iexplore.exe in C:\Windows\system32. One of the ways that malware tries to hide is to give itself the same name as a critical system file like iexplore.exe. However, it then places itself in a different location on your computer. The legitimate iexplore.exe is located in the C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer folder. Make sure of the spelling. If it is iexplor.exe of iexplorer.exe, then it's malware. Also check to make sure iexplore.exe is not loading at startup or that too can be malware.

Re: IExplore.exe running in background
Try running "iexplorer.exe" from the start menu and see if that opens IE. If it does, then just chalk it up to a cached copy so it will open up quicker. You may be able to remove it by running msconfig and removing it from there.
