Here are the some most popular IM clients available for Linux.

Pidgin is a chat program which lets you log in to accounts on multiple chat networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on MSN, talking to a friend on Google Talk, and sitting in a Yahoo chat room all at the same time.Pidgin runs on Windows, Linux, and other UNIX operating systems.
It is a universal client and supports protocols like Yahoo!, MSN (WLM), AIM, Jabber and it can be used even as a basic IRC client.Pidgin supports many features of these chat networks, such as file transfers, away messages, buddy icons, custom smilies, and typing notifications. Pidgin is free and contains no ads. All our code is open source and licensed under the GNU General Public License. This means you can get Pidgin's underlying code and modify it to suit your needs, as long as you publish the changes you make for everyone to benefit from as well.

Re: New IM Clients for Ubuntu
Have you ever heard about Kopete? Yes it is also an nice IM client for Ubuntu OS.
Kopete is an instant messenger supporting AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, IRC, Gadu-Gadu, Novell GroupWise Messenger, and more. It is designed to be a flexible and extensible multi-protocol system suitable for personal and enterprise use.The default client for IM in KDE3 and KDE4, Kopete, just like Pidgin, offers support for all the major protocols out there, including Yahoo!, Jabber, IRC, WLM or Gadu Gadu.
Kopete also features tools to enhance your IM, such as message encryption, archiving, and many other fun and useful effects. there, including Yahoo!, Jabber, IRC, WLM or Gadu Gadu. One of the minuses I found with Kopete is that it won't allow to send mass messages to a group which members are offline and it sometimes has problems setting your avatar so that others can see it.
Kopete supports all commonly used instant messaging protocols, and the Kopete team provides templates for developers to base new plugins on.
